British Broadens Methanol Toxicity Warning List with 11 Destinations

Methanol alert sign

The UK authorities has added 11 more countries to its public warning list regarding the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after multiple serious incidents such as the fatal demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even minimal doses of methanol can result in blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Utilized?

Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.

However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Government minister a senior official stated that all travellers should know the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"When you are having drinks overseas, stick to trusted places and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister warned.

"In case something seems unusual, for example a headache that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help fast."

The entire register of destinations listed as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
