Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Irish roster for the fall internationals, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the opening Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Northern province forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the summer tour.
Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new player in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states new Munster duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".
After playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has been in a couple of Leinster's three league games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is set to cover for the captain if the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
