No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
