Former FBI chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's legal representative filed the answer representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the case terminated for multiple reasons including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was charged shortly after the former president pressured his top legal official to move forward against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative advised the judge they intended to present various motions to dismiss the proceedings before a trial, claiming the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was unlawfully assigned to handle the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was originally managed by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his examination into an additional opponent - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was accompanied by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a government attorney who the former government recently fired.

Upon hearing to the judge state his rights and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's first term as president. At the period, the director was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was examining Democratic candidate Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against the candidate were never brought, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys assert James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he deceived the Senate by claiming he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets details about the government examinations.

Government lawyers also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, obstruct and slow" the committee by making false statements to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording James Comey published to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and charged Trump of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have known for considerable time that there are costs to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey emerged after the former president shared on digital channels insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against James Comey and others.
