Unusual Crimson Lightning Captured in Skies
Three image specialists based in the island nation have recorded photographs of crimson flashes, counted as the least common atmospheric displays in the world, where bright red bursts appear in the heavens.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
The photographers initially planned to capture the galactic core over the distinctive clay formations in the South Island of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the unusual spectacle.
Initially believing they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that after-dark period, but their expedition became “a night to remember,” a team member remarked.
While reviewing his photographs for a stellar landscape and discovered he had recorded red sprites,” he said. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced joyful noises and numerous expressions in the darkness.”
Defining Red Sprites
The scarlet phenomena are bursts of electrical energy in the mesosphere, produced by storm systems. Unlike traditional lightning that strikes downward to the earth, the phenomena shoot upwards towards the upper atmosphere, forming shapes that look like pillars, root vegetables or even marine creatures. The initial image of a such an event was captured – unintentionally – in 1989, by a research unit at the a academic organization.
Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – lasting just a millisecond – that they are seldom seen to the unaided vision, but one photographer had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking straight toward one when it occurred – pure chance observing the appropriate section of the firmament and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.
Seeing the occurrences was a dream for the photographer, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It looks like you witness an unreal vision, it’s very ethereal … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to witness.”
Technical and Creative Mastery
Capturing a this phenomenon requires a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and artistic vision, the individual said. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
A different team member said it was one of the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his career. “I was able to observe the starry river shining above the skyline while these enormous red tendrils of illumination danced above a electrical event at a great distance,” he said.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no further recordings capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in one frame.
“This was a singular occasion when you realize you are observing a phenomenon you’ll probably never see again.”
